The coffee date
.. life in a coffee plantation estate
The mighty Bhadra river races along the estate and numerous treks illustrate narrow pathways around the hills and plantations, but what keeps this holiday peppy are those exclusive caffeine shots fresh from the estate. Holiday at a sprawling coffee estate in Chikmagalur and craft your coffee flavor before you sip it at this century old coffee land stretching over 350 lush acres. And adding to that try picking pepper or even areca nut, go about finding rare herbs to enhance some delicacies and trudge into the forests early morning or even in the night.
And while the picking season is on, the hosts take guests through the process of making their own coffee starting with choosing the best beans, roasting the right way and grinding to prepare the perfect blend. Indeed, your cup of coffee this is!
Savour and saunter
Along with the serenity of the plantations, a number of indulgences enable some breath taking sites and culinary delights all through the stay. Take an evening drive and a walk to one of the highest peaks to enjoy a peg or a mug in a perfect milieu by the campfire that precedes a scrumptious dinner at the estate. There's an easy trek through the woods that involves picking herbs and leaves and bringing them back to the house for Amma to transform into delicious chutneys. Amma, the resident cook knows it the best and recipes of local specialties are often shared during the cooking demos that happen in the evenings.
Barbeque nights at the property can mean trying the Manglorean style pork and herb chutneys to go with it. The most awaited walk is to a nearby bridge where thousands of fruit bats take flight in the backdrop of an evening sky and is some sight. Nearby is a secret waterhole, to try some joy fishing. And armed with heavy duty torches a night walk around the estate can mean running into a deer or a wild boar and tuning in to some interesting animal calls.
At the planter's bungalow it is a melange of colonial and contemporary aesthetics where large rooms sport authentic furniture as well as tasteful modern pieces handpicked by the hosts. Set amidst fruit trees, this 50 year old marvel boasts of exquisite planters' furniture casually strewn around its drawing room, dining room and four bedrooms. The extensive ancestral property is meticulously maintained and the very interactive hosts share stories and anecdotes of an enviable lifestyle. The owners have a separate home along with a cottage and other rooms for travelers and with a limited number of guest also ensure an experience very close to living the life of a planter.
